Self-care as Something Deeper than Beauty

The other day, I was listening to Ariana Grande’s thank u, next. Of course, I’ve heard the song plenty of times before, but this time I found myself really listening to the message behind it.
The song reflects on past relationships and what each one taught her—love, patience, pain and, ultimately, growth. But the part that stayed with me was the realization that after looking for love through other people, there is also something incredibly important about learning to love yourself.
And I love that message.
Sometimes the Relationship We Forget About Is the One With Ourselves
We spend so much of our lives loving and caring for other people.
We take care of our families. We show up for our friends. We work, handle responsibilities, worry about the people we love and try to keep everything moving. Somewhere along the way, it can become very easy to put ourselves at the bottom of that list.
But loving yourself doesn't mean loving anyone else less.
Sometimes it simply means remembering that you deserve some of the same patience, kindness and attention that you give so freely to everyone else.
And I think that's something many of us have to learn over time.
What Self-Love Actually Looks Like
Self-love doesn't always have to be something big or life-changing.
Sometimes it's setting a boundary.
Sometimes it's forgiving yourself for something you wish you had done differently.
Sometimes it's accepting that you've changed.
Sometimes it's allowing yourself to rest without feeling guilty.
And sometimes, it really is as simple as taking 15 minutes at the end of a long day to wash your face, put on your favorite skincare products, use a face mask and do something that is entirely for you.
That's one of the reasons skincare has become more than just skincare to me.
It's a small ritual that says: I'm taking care of myself, too.
Thankful for What We've Learned
Another thing I appreciate about the message of thank u, next is the idea that not every chapter of our lives has to last forever to have value.
People, relationships and experiences can teach us something—even the difficult ones.
We can appreciate what they gave us, recognize what we've learned and still decide that it's time to move forward.
Maybe that's one of the most important parts of self-love: understanding that moving forward doesn't erase what came before. It simply means we're allowing ourselves to keep growing.
So, Here's Your Reminder
Take care of the people you love. Show up for them. Celebrate them.
But don't forget to include yourself.
Buy the skincare you've been wanting to try. Take the long shower. Put on the face mask. Turn on the music. Spend a few quiet minutes doing absolutely nothing. Give yourself grace when you don't have everything figured out.
Whatever self-care looks like for you, make a little room for it.
Because maybe one of the best relationships we can build throughout our lives is the one we have with ourselves.
And for that reminder?
Thank you, next. 💕
